OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to the growing buzz around DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup that has shaken Silicon Valley by delivering a powerful AI model at a fraction of the cost. DeepSeek’s R1 model has rattled investors, causing a massive sell-off in tech stocks and raising concerns that OpenAI and its rivals could be losing their competitive edge.

Altman acknowledged DeepSeek’s achievement, calling it an “impressive model” but insisted that OpenAI will develop “much better models.” He dismissed any suggestion that OpenAI would follow DeepSeek’s lead in reducing computing costs, arguing instead that more compute power is the key to building superior AI. His comments were aimed at reassuring investors worried about OpenAI’s massive spending on infrastructure.

The debate over AI efficiency versus brute-force computing is now front and center. DeepSeek’s success has demonstrated that high-quality AI can be trained with far less energy and money. Meanwhile, OpenAI is doubling down on its resource-heavy approach, committing $19 billion to the U.S. government’s $500 billion AI infrastructure plan, known as Stargate.

Some industry figures, including Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez, believe that AI companies focused on efficiency, rather than burning through billions, will ultimately come out ahead. But Altman remains committed to OpenAI’s long-term goal: building artificial general intelligence (AGI).

For now, OpenAI’s response to DeepSeek remains unclear. While Altman is confident in OpenAI’s approach, the emergence of a cheaper, highly capable alternative has left investors questioning whether a fundamental shift in AI development is on the horizon.
