Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has unveiled Grok-3, the latest version of its chatbot designed to compete with leading AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek. This release comes shortly after DeepSeek introduced a robust open-source model, highlighting xAI’s strategic push to enhance its presence in the AI sector.

Grok-3 is now accessible to Premium+ subscribers on X, Musk’s social media platform. Additionally, xAI has introduced a new subscription tier, SuperGrok, for users accessing the chatbot via its mobile app and Grok.com. During a recent livestream with xAI engineers, Musk emphasized that Grok-3 surpasses its predecessor, Grok-2, positioning xAI as a formidable contender in the open-source large language model arena.

To support the development of advanced models like Grok-3, xAI is significantly expanding its data center capabilities, including the construction of “Colossus,” a supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, touted as the world’s largest. Despite these advancements, some analysts question whether the improvements over Grok-2 justify the substantial resources invested.

In conjunction with Grok-3, xAI has launched DeepSearch, a reasoning-based chatbot designed to enhance tasks such as research, brainstorming, and data analysis. This tool articulates its thought process when responding to user queries, offering a more transparent AI interaction. Recently, Musk’s consortium’s $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit assets was declined, indicating ongoing competition within the AI industry.
