Microsoft is rolling out a new AI-powered scareware blocker for its Edge browser, designed to detect and prevent scams before they can trick users. Unlike traditional security tools, this feature operates locally on the user’s device, using machine learning and computer vision to compare suspicious full-screen pop-ups against thousands of known scam patterns.
When a threat is detected, Edge will automatically exit full-screen mode, stop any audio playback, and display a warning with a screenshot of the scam site. Users can also report new scams, contributing to Microsoft’s Defender SmartScreen, which helps block known phishing sites across Edge users globally.
This AI-driven approach means Edge can identify emerging threats that haven’t yet been added to scam databases, providing an extra layer of proactive protection. However, the scareware blocker isn’t enabled by default—you’ll need to manually activate it in Edge’s privacy settings and restart the browser.
Originally announced at Microsoft Ignite 2024, this feature is now available in preview for Edge stable channel users. With online scams becoming more sophisticated, Microsoft’s move could make Edge a safer choice for security-conscious users.
