Recent patent filings reveal that Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 will introduce Joy-Con controllers capable of functioning as computer mice. These controllers can be used horizontally on a flat surface, utilizing an optical sensor to detect movement, thereby mimicking traditional mouse operations. This design allows users to access thumbsticks and shoulder buttons while sliding the Joy-Cons, enhancing gameplay precision.
The patent also indicates that two Joy-Cons can be used simultaneously as mice, with one in each hand, or one can be used as a mouse while the other remains in a traditional grip. This flexibility could benefit genres like strategy games and first-person shooters, where precise control is crucial.
Additionally, the filings suggest that the Joy-Cons will attach to the console magnetically, replacing the previous sliding rail system. This magnetic attachment is designed to be secure yet easily detachable, improving user convenience.
